Roofing and driveways in Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford

Edgeworthstown, or Mostrim, sits on the main Dublin road east of Longford, with its own station on the Sligo line and the old Edgeworth family history behind the town.

Newer estates of semis and townhouses have grown up around the village since the 2000s, alongside older terraces on the main street and farm bungalows out the country. The estate roofs are young enough that problems are mostly verges, ridges and roof vents rather than whole roofs.

We fit dry verge and dry ridge systems so mortar stops washing out, sort gutters and fascias, and clean and re-colour roofs that have gone green.

A busy crossroads town

Edgeworthstown grew up where the N4 and the N55 meet, with a station on the Dublin to Sligo line, so it mixes an older main street with newer estates built for people working along the N4 corridor. Those estates are largely concrete tile on semi-detached and detached homes, and the earliest of them are now old enough for ridge mortar to crack and verge tiles to work loose in strong wind.

Wind across open ground

The land around Edgeworthstown is open and low, and gales from the west and south-west hit gable ends hard. Mortar-bedded verges are the first thing to go, followed by ridge tiles. A dry verge and dry ridge system mechanically fixes each tile, so there is no mortar left to wash out. Where tiles have already blown, we carry out roof repairs first and then fit the dry system.

Fascias, soffits and driveways

On many of the estate houses the timber fascias and soffits have rotted behind the gutter line. We replace them with uPVC fascias, soffits and new gutters, which removes the painting for good. Out on the country roads around Mostrim, the call is often for a drive done in tarmac or tar and chip with proper drainage at the gate.

Older houses on the main street

Edgeworthstown's older main street houses have slate roofs, chimney stacks and lead work that date back generations. On those we replace slipped slates, renew lead flashings and repoint chimneys rather than strip the whole roof, which keeps the character of the building. Flat roofs on rear extensions are usually re-coated at the same time.
