Newtownforbes is the village just north-west of Longford on the Sligo road, beside the walls of Castle Forbes and the Lough Forbes shore.
It is close enough to our Curry base that we can call out the same day for a leak. The village has older cottages and terraces along the main road, newer estates behind them and plenty of dormer bungalows on the roads out towards Drumlish and Killashee.
Dormer roofs need care around the roof windows, valleys and flashings, which is where most leaks start. We repair them, and re-roof when the old felt has had its day.
Newtownforbes is a few minutes up the N4 from Longford town, beside the Castle Forbes demesne and Lough Forbes on the Shannon. For us it is practically local work: James can call out to look at a roof or a drive on short notice, and the team can often fit a smaller repair in between bigger jobs in the area.
The village has older cottages and two-storey houses along the main road, newer estates behind them and plenty of one-off homes on the roads towards Drumlish and Killashee. The cottages often need chimney and lead work and slate repairs; the newer homes need roof cleaning, new gutters and dry verge as their first mortar starts to fail.
With so many houses set back from the main road, a good entrance and drive matter. We lay tarmac, tar and chip and block paving, fit ACO drainage channels where water runs towards the house or the road, and power wash and seal block paving that has gone green.
Plenty of houses in and around Newtownforbes still have working chimneys, and the stacks take the worst of the weather. Loose pots, cracked flaunching and gaps in the lead let water run down inside the breast. We repoint, reflaunch and dress new lead so the stack stays dry, and we can take down and cap a stack that is no longer used.
